New Growth February 2010 Healthy hair comes from a healthy scalp. That’s what Head & Shoulders has been campaigning recently, and they couldn’t be closer to the truth. Very often, the thought on the minds of natural newbies is the 'next best product' for transitioning hair or that 'special serum' that will result in a gorgeous head of hair.  It's important to use good products for the hair, but let's not neglect where the hair comes from--the scalp.

I've said it before and I'll say it again--grease is great for cars, but not for your hair and most definitely not for your scalp. So stay away from those petroleum jelly-like substances better known as "grease". It will only clog your follicles which leaves little room for good healthy hair growth. It is literally impossible to have a healthy head of hair when your scalp is congested and is in bad condition, so find a wonderful oil to condition your scalp that will ultimately leave you with healthy hair growth. Try mixing and matching, too.

To start you off, here are a few of my favs.

Olive Oil – Great for combating dryness
*My absolute favorite oil!

Castor Oil – Great for combating dryness, especially great for the colder seasons

Almond Oil – Great for combating dryness, and an awesome aroma
*essential oil

Green Tea Oil – Great for combating dandruff and soothing the scalp
*essential oil

Aloe Vera Gel – Although not an oil, it's great for scalp conditioning, combating dryness and balancing high levels of yeast.

These are only a few of a plethora of natural oils that promote a healthy scalp which results in healthy hair growth. But don’t stop here--go and do some more research. Have fun!

*Don't forget that rinses are great for the scalp too, like apple cider vinegar which can help control your ph balance.

*Be sure to perform a test patch when using an essential oil to avoid any possible skin irritations.
